As I began my journey into The 52nd Floor, I was immediately struck by the preface and the following: Great leaders are those who have a refined ability to adapt to change' and 'Increasing your adaptive capacity is what we aim to do with this book.' Fantastic! Life really is about change and our response to it. Change is a constant, but our response is not. Leaders responses are dynamic and morphing constantly. There are no Newtonian Laws commensurate with our response to change. Therefore, in my mind, success is tied to those possessing the awareness of self in response to the dynamics of change. This is precisely why the study of leadership will never end. It is a study more of self than rules, checklists, catch phrases, etc. Quite frankly, this book has been a tremendously enlightening read. I have not read a book on leadership that turns the focus primarily onto the leader by way of introspection! The unique methodology and approach to leadership have been refreshing and truly useful.

About the Author
Dr. Dave Levy is an associate professor of management at the United States Air Force Academy and holds a Ph.D. in Organizational Behavior from Cornell University. He served on active-duty for ten years with the military and spent several years as an organizational change consultant. He is a nationally renowned speaker in the field of adaptive leadership for senior executives.
Dr. Jim Parco is an award-winning scholar and expert in managerial decision-making. He has served on the National Security Council at the White House and worked extensively within US governmental agencies. He holds an MBA from the College of William and Mary and a Ph.D. from the University of Arizona. His publications appear throughout the top journals of experimental economics, business management, leadership, game theory and psychology.
Dr. Fred Blass is the Director of the Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans with Disabilities Program and a faculty member in the College of Business at Florida State University. His professional education includes a Ph.D. in Business Administration from Florida State University and a M.A. from George Washington University.
All three authors are Managing Principals of the RSC Consulting Group.

Question Everything and Assume Nothing!

The book, "The 52nd Floor," is written for serious professional leaders, future leaders, and anyone seeking ways to improve and implement leadership. Leadership seeks releationships and relationships are a must in creating leadership in your organization. Inside, you will not find the new surefire methods to improve productivity, cut costs, and instill an inspired work ethic in your employees. Fortunately, the authors give you a framework, using real world examples of human behavior and interaction, to reach your employees on a personal level thereby mentoring them to thier highest level of leadership. What is the question is the question. And when you find the question, think about it!

Alice's Adventures in a Leadership Theory Wonderland

Several years ago I quit reading books on leadership. I'd grown tired by the same 7-step formats listing secret traits and qualities of leaders all promising to "take you organization to a whole new level." They were like fast food, tasting nice going down, but leaving nothing of real substance for one to process.
I reluctantly opened the pages of "The 52nd Floor" doing so primarily because I knew some of the authors and respected them greatly. In doing so this is what I found,
"The world doesn't need another set of 'indisputable' laws or principles. It is our understanding that the only indisputable law is the fact that organizations and the people in them undergo constant change. What works today may not tomorrow..." (pg. 9)
Hmmm, something different. I was intrigued. I went on to discover a book that was not one big PowerPoint, but a collection of short stories designed to help the reader do something quite uncomfortable, sit and think deeply.
The layout of "The 52nd Floor," consisting of stories and questions broken up into sections on leadership, power, control, human nature, understanding, etc., is such that jumping around from page to page, writing all over the margins, responding to questions, making connections and questioning the norm become part of a reality-shifting, learning experience.
The authors understand the complexity of leadership and rather than prescribing formulas they help readers learn to think about people, behavior and environments. Topics like power, equality vs equity, the role of selfishness, behavioral psychology, game theory and emergent behavior all serve to expand the parameters of what we normally use to define leadership.
Reading this book, one feels a bit like Alice in Wonderland going on a strange, but delightful journey through the underworld of leadership theory meeting all sorts of strange characters along the way and often being left with a throbbing brain as things rarely end up as they appear.
If you want a quick read or easy solutions, this is not your book. But, if you are willing to take the time to go down the rabbit hole, authors Levy, Parco and Blass will ensure that the journey is something interesting and very worthwhile.

Leadership with a vision

This is one of those books that you may walk past because you think it is an everyday type of leadership book. I am here to tell you that is not. I have read many leadership books and this one is hands down the ONLY book that will actually change the type of leader you are OR provide the foundation for you to become a GREAT leader. How? It does not simple provide you things you should do to become a good or effective leader, it allows you to find it on your own. Basically, everyone that reads this can (and possibly) will see things differently. You can only love a book that allows you to develop or challenge your own thoughts (and possibly challenge your own morals, values, and perceptions). Human nature gives us the liberty to transform who we are based on our perceptions and sometimes we need a specific driving force (stimuli) to provide that guidance. This is what "The 52nd Floor" will give you. It will really let you "think deeply about leadership" and it will allow you to find your own way in being or becoming an effective leader. Everything in this book has meaning...you just have to tap into how "you" will perceive it and what you will gain from it. I am sure the answers will shock you (if you are honest with yourself). Kudos to Levy, Parco, and Blass.
