DON'T BUY THIS FOR YOUR KINDLE!!!!!

TERRIBLE formatting for the Kindle!! For example, you can't search for a phrase, since the Kindle version isn't indexed. There's no Table of Contents, and even the Contents of Authors pages aren't hyper-linked, so there's no way to even get to a specific author. I wouldn't have given it even *one star*, if I'd had that option! I have deleted it from my Kindle, and I'm glad I didn't pay much for it! What a waste!!

The definitive source for quotations

Bartlett's is where I go if I want to see exactly who said what, when, and in precisely what context. John Bartlett started his work about 150 years ago with approximately 250 people, and now in its current version, Bartlett's Familiar Quotations has more than 25,000 quotes from 2,500 people. The chronological layout also makes this very appealing and accessible, and moreso a book one can easily sit down with on a rainy day to peruse.

One thing I take issue with is the fact that several quotes from notable people I have picked up from reading elsewhere (perhaps even earlier versions of Bartlett's!) are not listed in the current book, among them:

"We were given two ears and one mouth that we may hear the more and speak the less." -Zeno

"We are what we repeatedly do; excellence then, is not an act, but a habit." -Aristotle

"I have nothing, yet have everything; and although I possess nothing, still of nothing am I in want." - Menander

The quotes above are not listed, while others are, such as "show me the money" from the movie Jerry Maguire in 1996! Somehow I think the former quotes will hold the test of time while that inane quote from the Hollywood movie will probably not even make it into the Bartlett's version two iterations down the line.

In my opinion, the only thing lacking is a proper gravitas; not enough emphasis is given to timeless figures such as Aristotle or Zeno in favor of contemporary quotes which in truth, possess very little meaning or truth, or in some cases, none at all.

That being given as a proviso, this is still the de facto source for quotations.

Not ready for Kindle

This kindle version is not well set up for the kindle. The search results are hard to read; the table on contents are not hyperlinked; very difficult to use and browse.

Look for a better / different version.

30 Seconds Over Tokyo

I was happy to find a copy of this book in the original twenty-five cent paperback. Published in 1944, shortly after author had written it, there was such a sense of immediacy to tell his story of the Doolittle Raid and his miraculous escape from China. It reminds me of the sacrifice made by the men who fought in WWII, which sadly is under appreciated by the present generation.

just like the movie

I have always loved this movie, but never knew there was a book. There are no pictures of the movie in this book. If you want that just google images of lwtps. The story, short only 142 pages can be read in one or two settings. Still having seen the movie, now on youtube many times I was just wondering about a few things. It's told in the person of rocky, and explains some things. How they met. But I would only recommend this book to real fans of the movie. Like me. It is expensive and rare so you'll have to pay.

Love With the Proper Stranger: A Novel

I loved the movie so to read the book that started it all was fun and informative. Some holes were filled in and the ending made a lot more sense than the ending in the movie. The movie left you hanging so you had to create your own ending. I was please so much of it was taken verbatim. The chase scene was better in the movie; some things are easier done in real-time as opposed to writing it all down. If you love the movie you will love this book because of the holes it fills in. While reading it I still saw Steve, Natalie, Herschel, Tom but NOT Edie. I just did not see her doing that role, I did see the woman who played Tom's (Colombo’s) mother in the role. She was a perfect fit! It is a quick read and I am sure you will enjoy it!

Entertaining

This little novel really is quite good entertainment. Most of the book is just dialogue, reading much like a screenplay, so it is hardly going to rank up there as an all-time great novel. The conversations between Ben and his parents, Ben and Mrs Robinson etc. are tremendously witty, and I found myself laughing out loud on a number of occasions. Ben is a considerably darker character than he appears in the (perhaps superior) film version, being a cynical and disillusioned graduate going through a depression during which he loses interest in just about everything and resigns himself to a life of 'bumming around'. I think I would agree with Douglas Brode, the film critic who wrote of the movie that it was not a story about the generation gap, but rather about a young man who feels as alienated from his own peers as from his parents' generation. This comes across much more strongly in the book, and we also get a very strong sense of WHY he feels so distanced from the rest of his culture - the superficiality and hypocrisy of middle-class America (this is very much a book of its time) is evident, and the reader finds himself disgusted with the shallow attitudes of the milieu in which Benjamin finds himself.

Hard to separate from the movie

As other reviewers have said, this book is only a classic because the movie is. THE GRADUATE is one of my favorite movies, and when I read this book I see Dustin Hoffman and Anne Bancroft. Still, this is probably the closest novel/movie adaptation I know of. The book reads like a screenplay. It's heavy on dialogue, most of which was used verbatim in the movie, and there's very little exposition. I found this a great model for writing dialogue, as well as saying a lot in the subtle reaction of a character. But if I hadn't seen the movie, I'm not sure what I'd think.

As for all those extremely negative Swiss reviews, I guess this book and the white suburban upper middle class American sub-culture it so accurately portrays do not come across as funny and as true to people from other cultures. That's understandable; I may not be able to fully relate to an accurate tale of European life. This apparent lack of universality is a valid complaint. But the book sure rings true to me. Benjamin's frustration and rebellion are all part of the normal search for meaning and self-fulfillment that many people go through. It's a classic American coming-of-age story complete with a profound identity crisis. And the discussion between Ben and his father about fighting fires and sleeping with prostitutes in frozen fields -- well, it wasn't in the movie and it makes me laugh out loud each time I read it. That part alone makes the book worthwhile.

Solid General History

This dated but informative book provides a solid general history of the Jewish people from biblical times and the middle ages up well into the 20th Century. The book describes the history of the Jews, their traditions, lifestyles, and contributions in various nations of Europe, plus the USA and to a much smaller extent, the Middle East and Latin America. Readers learn of Jewish thinkers, writers, scientists, leaders, and (where allowed) leading political figures. Readers also see how the Jews have endured despite centuries of blame and (often violent) persecution, countered on certain honorable occasions by prominent non-Jewish defenders. There is also a look at just what constitutes the Jewish people - are they are religion, a nation, a people, or some combination thereof? Author Nathan Ausubel (1898-1986) provides an attractive mixture of prose, photos and illustrations. This book should be of interest to both Jewish and non-Jewish readers, who can skim through the photos and headings, or take to it with in-depth reading.
