Quite Inspiring

I purchased this book decades ago from a book seller. It is a first edition and in excellent condition. I read the book and was swept away by the descriptive prowess of Van Dyke; clearly written when words spoke for pictures. I have since returned to the book for doses of inspiration and relaxation. Then I noticed I'd creased one of the pages! I was delighted to find the book on Kindle and immediately downloaded it. Now inspiration rests in my phone or tablet or laptop!
Van Dyke does an excellent job of bringing the reader back to the Holy Land. A more contemporary author did a similar thing decades later; the original is far better! You don't have to be religious to enjoy the book.

RATING FOR THE KINDLE VERSION - DO NOT BUY FOR KINDLE!

This book is really good, but I should have listened to the previous comment about the KINDLE VERSION being difficult to read. The footnotes are not accessible and where pictures should be it just says "can't put photo" or something. I bought this one week ago exactly and it will not let me return it. I wish I could return it and get the hard copy, it is really a good book but I do not enjoy reading it on the kindle because I feel like I am missing a lot and that is no fun.

What are you waiting for?

Great book. I can't believe I took so long to get around to buying it. It's not necessarily the type of book I'd read over and over, but I will definitely be lending it to friends to read. Just a very well written book and obviously a unique story. If you like Criminal Minds, Law and Order and those kind of shows you will love this book. Written from the prosecutor's perspective, there are details and explanations that are just...well, real.

Recommended.

I purchased the hard copy as recommend by another reader. Apparently the kindle version doesn't have the pictures that are in the hard copy. If that's the case (I can't be sure because I didn't order the kindle copy), I would HIGHLY recommend you purchase and read this one!

I loved this book. Incredibly interesting and detailed. Could not put it down. Have read it 3 times in a row. Such a sad gruesome true crime story. Vincent Bugliosi, prosecutor in the Sharon Tate and LaBianca murders captured details from beginning to end of each case. An amazing attorney and author. Recommended for any and all who enjoy true crime stories and can handle some gore and heartache:( as this book has it all.

Very slow and descripted

This is my second time reading this book, why, I have no idea! It is a classic and I love the word usages in creating such description. But, the descriptions just go on and on and on and on. I realize that way back then, before TV, internet, etc. the authors had to paint a very detailed description as to what is going on in the story. If you like a lot of description, this is a must-read book. If you like a lot more dialog and getting to the point, then this is not a book that you would like. It has only 250 pages and it just took me forever to get through it even with skipping over paragraph after paragraph. The one really good thing is that I have increased my own vocabulary!!

Don't mean to criticize Mr. N. Hawthorne but...

I had never read this book before and I love reading the classics. Mr. Hawthorne was extremely verbose in this novel. The story line was interesting but there was so much description of every minute detail of the house, the garden, how people were dressed, etc. The descriptions did paint a picture but I wish he had moved the plot along a bit more quickly. Then he wraps everything up in a neat little package in the last chapter which was disappointing. He took so long to tell the story, I wish he had taken longer to reveal all that was to be revealed. But who am I to criticize Nathaniel Hawthorne?

About 80 percent of this book is dedicated to describing the characters' state of mind and the environment around them. Only about twenty percent is actually about actions taken by the characters. I guess if you like that sort of thing, you will enjoy the book. It just wasn't for me.

María Celeste Arrarás is an Emmy–award winning veteran television presenter of news programs on Telemundo, Al Rojo Vivo con María Celeste, and Noticiero Telemundo. Fascinating, Inspiring, very enjoyable reading

I am always a bit guarded about books written by celebrities. This one pleasantly surprised me. There is so much wisdom in the lessons from Maria's life. Her stories are very interesting, revealing so much about the real person behind the stories.

I think that we often believe that some people reach the top because of their exceptional beauty or above average intelligence. Maria is a great example that beauty and intelligence are just the price of admission. In the final analysis, it is hard work and dedication to be among the best that make the difference.

There are 35 stories that Maria shares about her life. Each story has a very important lesson that everyone can learn from. These are not lessons about how to get to the top but how to live your life. The stories are all short and therefore the book is extremely easy to read. You simply fly through the book. If there is any criticism it would be that the lessons may be understated. There are some very profound lessons that are contained in just one or two sentences. It is highly likely that some people will read them too fast and miss the lesson.

"My mother has taught me that there is hidden value in hearing the bad. Only those who truly care about will tell you like it is; keep them close, and take their critiques seriously." This is so important. Generally we hate honest feedback. We do everything in our power to avoid it. But as Maria points out, only by having honest criticism can we make the improvements we need to make in life.

One of the best lessons is the final lesson. "Carry the one tool that will never fail: your principles. That's when you must trust the compass of your convictions. Your moral compass." Too often we let our lives be swayed by the various forces swirling about us. We need to be anchored in our principles.

This is a very enjoyable read. However the lessons are very serious and while we may have heard most of them before, we can all benefit by being reminded of these "Prime Time Life Lessons".

It is easy to look at a celebrity and think that they have an easy life. Maria reveals that every life has some pain and disappointments. Money and fame do not make a person immune to heartbreak.

One other lesson that Maria learned so early in life was discipline to do the work necessary for success. If we could instill a bit more discipline in the young people, we would surely have more success. She dispels the belief that success is just something that happens to the lucky.

I highly recommend this book - especially for young people looking for guidance.

Different lessons than intended, perhaps

Not exactly an autobiography, not exactly a self-help book, but some combination of the two, Maria Celeste Arraras ("Mari") says she wrote this book for her children, to teach them what she's learned.

Each chapter begins with a stated lesson, like "If you can't climb over an obstacle, dig a tunnel under it" or "Trust your mother. She'll always tell it like it is" followed by a story from Mari's life demonstrating the lesson and how she learned it.

Some of the lessons seem a little arbitrary. The fact that she survived a encounter with a rampaging elephant was pretty much luck -- I'm not sure that's a good rationale for advising people to live dangerously. Plenty of people live dangerously and die young.

Some advice is even contradictory. In one chapter we're instructed to rely on our "sixth sense" and in another warned not to let our imagination run away with us. Both lessons only work in hindsight -- there was no way to confirm at the time whether each suspicion was real or not.

Overall, though, the stories are interesting and fun to read. To my eye, though, Mari does not seem to have noticed other people's lives enough to see what makes her different. Here's what I took from the book:

1) Learning intense self-discipline at an early age is invaluable to high achievement later in life. (More a lesson to parents, perhaps.)

2) Having a perfectly clear vision of your goal, and being willing to do and sacrifice anything to achieve that goal greatly improves your chances for success.

3) Being forgiving and compassionate is beneficial to both yourself and others, even more so, perhaps, when you've become wealthy and famous.

If you're a fan, go ahead and pick up a copy. If you're interested in what it takes to be prominent TV news player, this book will show you. If you're looking to improve yourself... there are better choices. Her life lessons, though illuminating and entertaining, are occasionally based on questionable ethical standards (lying, leaving your husband in favor of a job, working so hard you never see your kids), and not widely applicable.

Sound Advice and Conveyance of Wisdom

I got this book mainly for my wife, who watches María Celeste Arrarás on Al Rojo Vivo.

Above all, this book is about the obstacles María has confronted in her life and how she has grown from them. A series of stories about her life convey life lessons and guide the reader to remain grounded in their principles (don't become a sell out) and to set a goal and go for it.

One premise that I often grapple with is that success comes naturally to the lucky, the beautiful or the highly intelligent. Perhaps María Celeste Arrarás has an ideal mix of these traits which lead to her success, though she chalks up her success to vision and discipline. Her optimism is definitely part of what makes her a success. One of the important lessons she reveals is that every obstacle hides an opportunity. Contrast that with the pessimistic view of "in front of every silver lining is a cloud."

The book reads easily as María takes us through her lessons. Her personal formula for success unfolds a chapter at a time, culminating into a set of wisdom that is successfully passed on to the reader. As with any book of this genre though...success comes only to those who apply these principles with fervor. Simply reading a book like this won't do anything to make you successful. YOU have to make yourself successful, and this book is a good launching point for such a journey.

This book is ideal for young readers or anyone who needs a frame of reference. Overcoming career and personal obstacles is a daunting task, and the guidance presented here is sound.
