1958 book of liturgy and hymns still has use today

This SERVICE BOOK AND HYMNAL (1958) was compiled by a consortium of eight U.S. Lutheran denominations and actually predates the mergers that created the pre-ELCA ALC and LCA in the early 1960s. It came in classic "hymnal" red with a definite Fifties-hymnal trim size of about 8.5 by 5.5" (21 x 14 cm). Yet it's a very thick job for that era, 1,102 pages, over 275 of them given over to elements such as liturgy (two main settings), general, morning and evening suffrages, canticles, occasional services, word-only Psalms, and "General Rubrics" (being pretty much guidelines and directives for the Order of Worship). Lutherans and others with a particular concern for liturgy will enjoy seeing how the proceedings have changed over the last fifty-odd years.
The rich collection of hymns and songs (602) merits considerable interest. Hymns begin with the Christian year and -- a holdover from the 1930s and 40s -- do not show common or first-line titles but only tune names (i.e., NICAEA but not "Holy, Holy, Holy" and I will stick to that usage whenever possible). Some of the tunes here come in two settings but with the same or similar lyrics, such as VENI, EMMANUEL, CHRIST LAG IN TODESBANDEN and Bach's WACHET AUF ("Awake, for Night Is Flying"). LASST UNS ERFREUEN has three, but only one with the customary "Ye Watchers and Ye Holy Ones" wording; so does ST. GEORGE'S WINDSOR, only one with the prevailing Thanksgiving lyrics. Martin Luther's EIN' FESTE BURG is here twice, but only once as "A Mighty Fortress." (It is unusual for a specifically Lutheran hymnal not to show that seminal hymn in the older, "Rhythmic" (non-metric) hymnody of Luther's day as well.) Along with common names, I couldn't help but notice the absence of time signatures: 4/4, 6/8 and so on. That seems to be common in many postwar Lutheran hymnals, but I'm not sure why -- perhaps the German musical tradition presupposes a standard of experience that considers them unnecessary? Some hymns incorporate "Amen" at the end, others do not. This is actually a judgment call and not all that unusual for the time.
The many constituent denominational contributors to the SBH reflect not only a variety of hymnody but also a growing cosmopolitanism of source material. Do not assume, though, that SBH is so assimilated as to constitute an all-purpose church hymnal. You'll find "Rock of Ages" here but not "Amazing Grace." "Savior, Like A Shepherd Lead Us" (BRADBURY) but not "Leaning On the Everlasting Arms." Holst's "In the Bleak Mid-Winter" (their spelling; tune name is CRANHAM) but not "Infant Holy, Infant Lowly." Nonetheless, the SERVICE BOOK AND HYMNAL is a wonderful and varied trove of Protestant hymnody and any avid collector or church musician would probably be glad to have one. Fortunately, used copies are abundant and gently used copies not difficult to find. For a good deal, though, you'll have a much wider choice if you are willing to accept copies that have exterior embossing or interior dedication plates.

A trip down Memory Lane

I attended Lutheran schools from Grade 5 through high school, during which weekly "chapel" was a compulsory class held in the attached church of our school. I remember this as being a high point of my youthful life, as there was so much uplifting joy in those Lutheran services, back when they sang the service and hymns in the traditional King James version style...for instance, back when the Holy Spirit was the Holy Ghost, and words like thence and spake were commonplace. This service book & hymnal was originally published in 1958 but reissued yearly through 1975 (this version), and is in the Evangelical Lutheran style of the day, with all the favorite hymns I loved dearly included, before the wording was modernized -- songs include Crown Him With Many Crowns, Holy Holy Holy Lord God Almighty, and Praise to the Lord the Almighty the King of Creation, as well as numerous famous Christmas tunes, and many American anthems including God Bless America and O Beautiful For Spacious Skies. The musical notes are all there if you play and instrument to refresh your memory, or if like myself the tunes were so ingrained in you that you will enjoy the almost total recall. I am still a churchgoer but the times they have a-changed, and this book is a sweet reminder of simpler, joyful times.

The Hymnal I Grew Up With

I've been trying to find this hymnal (ours was lost in a move). I've been a Lutheran all my life, and still love the hymns. However, in our current hymnal, a lot of the "good tunes" were left out, and the "not so poplular or pretty" tunes left in. As a choir member and sometimes- piano player for the service, I like to break out these old favorites and sing or play them.
